The cemeteries in
which Stephentown's people are buried. That's a broader subject than
just the boundaries of the town. As expected the data which the Society
has includes people who were buried here. It also has individuals whose
bodies ended up in cemeteries in nearby and sometimes even foreign
cemeteries. Some moved away, some were buried in family plots located
elsewhere, and more than a few were only short-time residents or had
ties to the town which may be discovered in doing historical research.
And Remember: in
the early days, Stephentown covered a much larger area, including parts
or all of many Rensselaer County towns. (See
Map.) An older cemetery may have
been in Stephentown when it was in use, but could now be in another
town. Town locations in the table below are the current (2010) towns
and communities.
The geographical
influence of living here in the mountains and valleys also tends to be
more important than political subdivision. The northern Jericho Valley
section of Hancock, MA has a long-standing affinity to the Stephentown
community. Similarly, the West Stephentown community often showed
stronger connections with Sand Lake. But then, some of the listed
cemeteries never were in the old Stephentown nor were geographically
connected; they just are the final resting place of folks important to
the history of Stephentown.
